How To Apply Concrete Sealer
Applying concrete sealer is an easy process that almost anyone can do. It requires nothing more than the right concrete sealer for the task, a few tools and a little time.
How Much Concrete Sealer Will You Need?
Measure the length and width of the area to be sealed. Multiply length times width to determine the square footage of the space. How much concrete sealer you will need is determined by the type of sealer and the porousness of your concrete. It is best to consult the manufacturer's directions to ensure that you have an adequate amount of concrete sealer for your project....
Surface Preparation
Your concrete surface must be clean and free of dirt, mildew, oils, grease and loose debris. Unless you are sealing a new surface, it it recommended that you use a portable power washer to acheive a deep clean. Any dirt, grease, oil or even petroleum residue (including those from certain concrete cleaners) will prevent concrete sealer from complete penetration.
- Wet the surface to be sealed.
- Apply a cleaning solution or detergent according to the directions. Cleaners with bleach can help to brighten the appearance of concrete, providing a more attractive finish.
- Use a stiff bristled brush to loosen dirt and oil, optimizing the cleaner.
- Using the power washer, rinse the concrete thoroughly, removing all suds, dirt and any remaining loose particles.
- Allow concrete to completely dry before proceeding with the concrete sealer.
Applying the Concrete Sealer
Concrete sealer may be applied with a brush, roller, or low pressure sprayer. If a sprayer is used, you may want to back roll it with a medium nap roller to ensure proper penetration.
- Stir the sealer to mix completely. DO NOT shake the sealer as it will create unsightly air bubbles in the finished product.
- Apply sealer to the concrete surface. Create a thin, even layer that covers well but does not pool. Allow to dry completely.
- Apply second coat of concrete sealer. Allow to dry completely. Follow any additional manufacturers instructions.
